Eco Literacy
At Bede’s Prep, environmental awareness is embedded across the curriculum rather than being confined to a single subject area.
Pupils explore environmental issues from a variety of perspectives, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the natural world. This may include studying environmental themes in English, writing persuasively about sustainability, investigating coastal processes and erosion in Geography, or examining the scientific evidence behind climate change. Through these experiences, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to engage thoughtfully with environmental issues both locally and globally.
Our location
Bede’s is incredibly lucky to be nestled between the breath taking South Downs and the Sussex Coastline, making the local landscape the ultimate outdoor classroom.
Through Forest School and Beach School programmes, pupils engage in outdoor learning that encourages exploration, independence and a deeper understanding of the natural world. These experiences help foster a lasting appreciation for the environment while supporting pupils’ personal development and wellbeing.
At the centre of many of our sustainability initiatives is the pupil-led Eco Committee, which includes representatives from Reception to Year 8. The committee plays an active role in promoting environmental awareness across the school and has helped Bede’s achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction for two consecutive years.
The committee leads a range of projects and campaigns, including:
- Community Action – organising local litter picks and beach clean-up events.
- Energy Awareness – monitoring energy use around the school and promoting initiatives such as ‘Black Out’ Day to encourage energy conservation.
- Recycling and Fundraising – coordinating recycling campaigns and supporting environmental charities through fundraising activities.
Through these initiatives, pupils are encouraged to take responsibility, work collaboratively and make a positive contribution to their community. By providing opportunities for meaningful action, Bede’s helps pupils develop the knowledge, confidence and commitment to become responsible and informed environmental citizens.
