Joining a Reception class is a momentous part of every child’s life and it is our aim that every child will fill confident, happy and secure when they start with us.

Our curriculum is creative and investigative and allows children to develop their skills and competencies in small groups under the caring support and expert guidance of the teachers working with them.

During this key stage of development we focus on skills of writing, maths, science investigation and critical thinking, nurturing and enabling the tools they will need in their future learning journeys.

With the exception of specialist subjects such as dance, games, music and swimming, children are taught in their class groups.  As a result, our children enjoy the security and familiarity of their own classroom environment, spending high-quality time with their teacher as well as learning new skills and subjects from specialist teachers.

We promote child-initiated learning in order to build early independence.  To achieve this, each child is supported and challenged in tasks that are skilfully tailored to individual needs.  At this early stage, we encourage children to reflect on their own learning as well as appreciate the efforts of others.

Our unique location at the foot of the South Downs National Park and beside a beautiful coastline offers children fantastic learning opportunities.  This includes the Bede’s on the Beach programme, investigations on the South Downs as well as the use of our own Outdoor Classroom.
