Ceramics at Bede’s is rooted in a Sussex legacy that predates our 35 years in "The Kennels." We sit upon a historic site of artisan excellence, from Neolithic fragments to the renowned 19th-century Dicker Pottery.

Today, this rich heritage inspires a vibrant, modern department where students consistently achieve an outstanding 100% A-B at GCSE and A-Level*. By blending traditional earthenware techniques with contemporary innovation, we empower the next generation of potters. At Bede’s, pupils don't just study ceramics; they become part of a living history of creative brilliance and academic success.

As part of the Creative Carousel, Year 9 pupils explore Ceramics to build a foundation in three-dimensional design. This early exposure allows pupils to discover hidden talents before progressing to GCSE and A-Level. Our vibrant department extends beyond the timetable, offering sessions via the activities programme and on Saturday mornings.

By blending Ceramics with other creative disciplines, pupils develop a versatile skill set. This multidisciplinary approach has seen our alumni thrive as architects, jewellery designers, and VFX artists. At Bede’s, we ensure that working with clay provides the essential technical expertise for a successful career in the creative industries.

The Bede’s Ceramics department is a creative sanctuary where pupils master diverse techniques, from Raku firing and slab building to intricate glazing and clay printing. We treat ceramics as a sculptural discipline, encouraging pupils to think fluently in three dimensions.

This rigorous, imaginative approach yields exceptional results, with pupils frequently achieving 100% A*-B grades. Many pupils progress onto institutions like Central Saint Martins and UCL.
