Media Studies

We offer GCSE and A Level Media Studies. Media at Bede's provides fantastic opportunities for both practical and theoretical learning. All of our courses give pupils the opportunity to explore their creativity, using industry-standard cameras. lighting and software packages. At the same time, we seek to examine and interrogate the media, learning about its power and influence through our study of games, cinema, television, social media, magazines, newspapers and advertising. All Media pupils will have access to the Adobe Creative Cloud, providing them with the software packages they need to create their best work (Photoshop, In-Design, Premier-Pro and After Effects)

The Film Academy activity runs every Monday and gives Media pupils the chance to further explore using our studio space as well as learning more about our lighting, audio gear and gimbal stabilisers. In addition, we often run Media-related activities on a Tuesday, such as "Films of the 1970's" or "Classic Road Movies", giving the pupils a chance to learn more about the rich history of cinema. We also have a rolling programme of speakers who visit and speak about the industry. Previous talks have been on animation, documentary, shooting music videos in Africa, and working in special effects. Media is also on the Creative Carousel, allowing Year 9 pupils the opportunity to explore making and studying advertising.

Media Studies is the ideal blend of hands-on practical/creative learning and in-depth, illuminating theoretical investigation. Pupils have the chance to makes fantatstic creative projects whilst also hugely increasing their understanding of what it is like to live and work in a heavily mediated world.

The New York Trip is always a highlight for Media pupils. Every other December, we fly to Manhattan for a three-day visit, taking in the main tourist sites, but also visiting the Museum of the Moving Image and The New York Film Academy. We shall be heading to New York in Dec 2026 and again in Dec 2028. We also visit Pinewood Studios for their annual Open-Day.
