Photography is the visual language of the modern world, empowering pupils to capture, communicate and challenge perspectives. At Bede’s, it is an exceptionally popular subject, offered to Year 9 pupils via the creative carousel, followed by dedicated GCSE and A-Level pathways. Our department consistently achieves some of the highest results in the school, boasting 86% Grade 9–7 at GCSE and 100% A*–B at A-Level. At Bede’s, we offer specialised Darkroom Masterclasses and keep our doors open daily for general activities. Pupils can work independently during evening preps with staff guidance or utilise the facilities every Saturday morning. To ensure our Year 11 and 13 students feel fully prepared, we also provide dedicated Easter Workshop days, offering essential extra support and a creative head start before their final exams.  Every two years the Creative Arts Faculty leads an inspiring trip to New York City, where students immerse themselves in the "Big Apple's" world class exhibitions and iconic street photography.

Our department blends traditional methods with modern digital techniques. We house an exceptional 35mm film darkroom where students can master the art of developing film, printing, and experimental processes like pinhole photography and photograms. For digital work, we offer a portrait studio, and specialised lightbox setups for professional still life photography. Beyond the classroom, we take trips to exhibitions and host film nights, we also invite alumni to return to share their experiences of university and professional life after Bede’s, offering current students a bridge between their studies and the wider creative world.

Photography at Bede’s is an inclusive subject where every pupil can flourish.
