Opening Doors to the World
The Languages Faculty at Bede’s stands as a vibrant hub of communication and cultural inquiry, dedicated to empowering students with the tools to navigate a globalised world.
By uniting English Language, English Literature, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), and English as an Additional Language (EAL), we offer a cohesive curriculum that celebrates both the mechanics of expression and the beauty of global narratives.
Whether pupils are dissecting the nuances of a Shakespearean tragedy or mastering the subjunctive in French, Spanish, or German, the core objective remains the same: to foster empathy, critical thinking, and articulate self-expression and develop versatile and confident communicators who are as comfortable analysing a text as they are navigating a foreign city.
We provide a rigorous academic pathway from Year 9 through to the Sixth Form:
- English Department: Balances the technical precision of the English Language with the creative, socio-political explorations found in English Literature at both GCSE and A Level.
- Modern Foreign Languages: Emphasises authentic communication and cultural immersion, preparing students for the global stage.
- EAL Support: Provides bespoke, specialist provision to ensure our international pupils achieve the same high standards of academic literacy as their peers.
Beyond the Classroom
The vibrant enrichment programme allows us to ensure that language is not just a subject to be studied, but a lived experience:
Debating & Public Speaking:
Bede’s has a prestigious reputation in debating, participating in the ESU Schools Mace and the Oxford and Cambridge Union competitions, fostering high-level rhetoric and critical thinking.
Creative Writing & Publications:
The Small Island publication allows pupils to see their creative writing and journalism in print, providing a platform for English Language and Literature pupils to showcase their work.
MFL Experiences:
Beyond standard trips, the school offers immersion days and cultural workshops, such as French or Spanish cooking and film screenings, to ensure Modern Foreign Languages are treated as living cultures.
Model United Nations (MUN):
A popular activity where pupils debate global issues in a foreign language or represent different nations, bridging the gap between EAL, Languages, and Politics.
