The Bede’s EAL Department provides a nurturing environment where second-language learners excel academically while enriching our community with their diverse cultural heritages. By offering a suite of language qualifications alongside integrated pastoral and academic care, we ensure every pupil is fully equipped for their next educational milestone. Our curriculum offers a strategic range of examinations tailored to each student's linguistic proficiency and future goals. For near-native speakers, the IGCSE First Language English focuses on mastering sophisticated communication and precision in reading comprehension and writing. Alternatively, the IGCSE Second Language English provides a comprehensive foundation for those still refining their fluency across all disciplines. For our Upper Sixth pupils, we offer a dedicated one-year IELTS course alongside their A Levels; as a globally recognised benchmark for English proficiency, this qualification is essential for securing entry into top-tier UK universities and international institutions.

We maintain a strict limit on class sizes to ensure every student receives the cognitive "airtime" they need to flourish:

1-to-1 Support: Intensive, individualized sessions focused on specific academic gaps or rapid integration.

Small Groups (6–8 pupils): Our standard setting, designed to spark peer-to-peer interaction while maintaining a direct line to the teacher.

Maximum of 10: Even at our largest, our classes remain small enough for the teacher to pivot their lesson plan in real-time based on a student’s immediate needs.

Why Intimacy Matters in EAL:
In a traditional large classroom, a language learner might remain silent to avoid mistakes. In our intimate settings, the "affective filter"—the anxiety that blocks learning—is lowered.

Our comprehensive induction program ensures a seamless transition for every international pupil. In their first week, pupils are mentored by EAL Ambassadors who provide peer-to-peer guidance and help us identify and resolve any settling-in challenges early on. We view EAL not just as a subject, but as a central support hub. This model includes structured evening prep, social engagement at the EAL Club, and consistent language coaching integrated into afternoon activities and Saturday morning sessions.

Choosing the right university is a pivotal moment, and our team brings decades of experience in supporting international pupils through this journey. We take the guesswork out of global applications, conducting deep-dive research into courses and requirements that best fit each student’s academic strengths. Our hands-on approach extends to the Personal Statement, where we mentor pupils to articulate their story with clarity, purpose, and a competitive edge.
