In Year 9, pupils explore improvisation and devised theatre to build confidence. This transitions into GCSE Drama, where pupils follow the Eduqas syllabus, balancing performances with theatrical design and written analysis.

In the Sixth Form, pupils can choose between the academic A Level Drama and Theatre or a vocational BTEC in Production Arts. Beyond the classroom, the school offers LAMDA exams and the chance to perform in professional venues like the Devonshire Park Theatre, supported by student led technical crews.

Bede’s Drama department offers a professional grade co-curricular experience defined by its "no house style" philosophy, encouraging diverse creative expression. Pupils can participate in large scale Senior Productions at professional venues or more intimate shows in the on site Miles Theatre. Unique opportunities include performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, NT Live screenings and joining the Theatre Production team to master technical roles in lighting and sound. Additionally, the department hosts residential trips and workshops led by industry practitioners, alongside a comprehensive LAMDA programme for individual performance qualifications.

Bede’s provides extensive performance opportunities across all year groups. Pupils can participate in large-scale Senior School Productions and School Musicals, often held at professional venues like the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. Younger pupils engage in Junior School Shows and Theatre in Education plays. High-profile opportunities include a week long run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and additionally, pupils perform in curriculum-based GCSE and A Level scripted showcases, pupil-directed productions, and modern language plays, all supported by professional-grade facilities in the Miles Theatre.

Bede’s offers LAMDA examinations as part of our extensive co-curricular performing arts program. Pupils across various year groups can receive specialist training in preparation for annual examinations in areas such as Acting, Verse and Prose, and Public Speaking. Lessons are typically delivered by peripatetic teachers and can be taken individually or in pairs. These qualifications help pupils develop communication skills and confidence, with higher grades also offering valuable UCAS points for university applications.
