Business Studies

In the Fifth Form, we offer a GCSE in Business Studies and a BTEC in Business. The GCSE is assessed via 2x exams (no coursework) whereas the BTEC is assessed via 75% coursework assignments and 25% exam. In the Sixth Form we offer an A Level in Business Studies which is assessed via 4x exams (no coursework) and a BTEC in Business which is assessed 58% externally assessed (exams) and 42% coursework. All courses cover different functional areas of Business (Marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Operations as well the dynamic business environment - macroeconomics, legislation, technology etc.)

We have regular guest speakers as well as trips out. In the past couple of years we have visited Rathfinney's Wine Estate, had a talk from an Investment Banker who worked from Credit Suisse during the Financial Crisis, hosted a presentation from a brand management company, a talk on the future of Sustainable Banking from an MD for Accenture, an Entrepreneur who had developed their own brand of soup Re: Nourish, Hosted Multiple SHAPE symposium events where pupils can research and present on topics of interest to them related to Business and Economics.

Some pupils will go on to use the courses as their first step to running their own business one day and many will use it as the pursue careers in Banking and Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Operations.

All the courses are useful regardless of the chosen career path of a pupil and will enable learners to make more informed financial and commercial decisions. The courses are rooted in reality, highly relevant and dynamic, making the department the most popular choice of the option subjects.
