Biology

Biology is the scientific study of life and living organisms, spanning from the technical molecular mechanics of DNA to the complex interactions within ecosystems in both GCSE & A level.

Why Study It?
It is the gateway to solving 21st-century challenges and ensure living organisms thrive to maintain life on Earth so all three domains interact for as long as possible: By mastering core concepts like interderdependence, bioenergetics, genetics, and infection—the next generation of Biologists, Geneticists, Medics and Veterinary's gain the tools to :

• Combat Disease: Understanding pathogens and immunology is vital for global health.
• Ensure Sustainability: Managing biodiversity is crucial for food security and climate action.
• Ethical Insight: It empowers you to navigate complex debates on gene technology and stem cells.

Teaching of the AQA Biology GCSE begins in the First Year in order to allow sufficient time for the syllabus to be taught thoroughly with plenty of time for practical work. 

During the First Year, pupils study cell organisation, structure, division and transport before moving on to infection and response, bioenergetics and homeostasis in the Lower Fifth before concluding with inheritance, variation, evolution and ecology in the Upper Fifth. 

Specialist biologists teach both the GCSE Combined Science and separate triple Biology. Lessons combine whole class discussions and explanations with tasks done individually, in pairs and small groups.  Biology lessons are taught in four spacious and well-equipped laboratories.  The excellent resources and our full-time biology technician enable students to carry out many interesting and enjoyable practical tasks. 

At A Level, pupils go on to investigate further in areas such as immunity and forensics, biodiversity and conservation, genetics and  response control systems by plants, the brain and eye. 

We are priviliged to have high magnification microscopes, gel electrophoresis, centrifuge and spectrophotometer euipment and we make excellent use of our School Zoo, ponds and fields during teaching to learn biological investigative skills and techniques to either inspire pupils to take the subject further or simply enjoy this life-affirming subject. 

Monday Medics, open to all ages, is a weekly drop in session. The older aspiring medics spend time crafting their personal statements, organising work experience, practising their interview skills and exam prepping for the UCAT. The younger years spend time engaging with current medical news and debating ethical dilemmas as a soft start to preparing for the Situational judgement part of the UCAT.

There are termly events and workshops including the history of Urine analysis, blood type labs and University lectures. 

We use our varied three ponds to learn about different sampling techniques e.g nets and examine biodiversity between water invertebrates species comparing size, water source and light intensity and we sample and calculate our biodiversity in the hedging around the school playing fields at Triple and A Level. In Lower Fifth & Upper Fifth will examine different plant diseases & lichens as Bioindicators found in school shrubery and trees.
