Physics

Physics is the fundamental science that uncovers the laws governing the universe, from subatomic particles to vast galaxies. Studying it develops critical problem-solving skills and powers the technological innovation, such as medical imaging and sustainable energy, that define our modern world. It is the essential toolkit for understanding how reality works. Our GCSE and A-level pathway provides a balanced, challenging and exciting route to understanding the key principles of Physics, as well as showing excellence in practical laboratory skills, in preparation for a wide range of higher education courses that utilise this subject.

At Bede's, First year pupils study Physics along the AQA GCSE Combined Science pathway, covering the concepts of Energy and Electricity; in Lower Fifth they extend this to coverage of Particle, Atomic Structure, and Forces, before completing the GCSE programme of study with Waves and Magnetism in Upper Fifth. For pupils studying Separate Physics, this is augmented by an extra topic on Space. At A-level we follow the AQA specification, ensuring continuity of style and language, learning the concepts of Particle Physics, Waves, Mechanics, Electricity, Thermal Physics, Gases, Fields, and Nuclear Physics, with a choice of one of five optinal modules in Year 13.  

The Science Fact or Fiction activity presents a unique and popular opportunity for pupils to explore cutting-edge concepts beyond the curriculum that arouse their curiosity. Every winter, pupils have the opportunity to engage in exciting practical activities beyond the curriculum, including comet-making, University lecture trips, and Astronomy Evenings.

Space Science and Astronomy are woven into the fabric of the Physics curriculum at Bede's, at both GCSE and A-level. The Space module is an important component of the Separate Physics GCSE, but links are apparent between all modules and Space Science applications, for example in the study of thermal energy transfer, the laws of motion, electromagnetic waves or nuclear fusion. At A-level the Astrophysics module remains the most popular optional choice for pupils in Year 13.
