Psychology

Psychology is the study of the mind and human behaviour. Studying psychology unlocks an understanding of the processes behind thinking, feeling and our perceptions of the world. In developing an in-depth understanding of the principles of psychology during their time here at Bede's, pupils are better equipped to thrive in the world of work and skilfully navigate social environments. Studies in social pressure, sleep and dreams, elephant learning and phobias are just some of the topics that captivate and inspire the pupils.

We offer both A Level and BTEC Psychology. Both consider different approaches to explaining the similarities and differences between people and their behaviours. The main difference is the A level programme is exam based, consisting of two AS exams at the end of the Lower 6th and two exams at the end of the Upper 6th. Within the A level pupils learn about the theories, studies and in depth evaluation, specialising in clinical and health psychology in the Upper 6th. Within the BTEC programme, pupils study two exams and two coursework based units, with a specialist unit of sports psychology.

Pupils can get involved in the psychology society, who meet regularly to explore the subject beyond the constraints of the curriculum. There are also various competitions that take place across the year, along with visits to the zoo to explore phobias with our resident snakes and tarantulas. Pupils have visited the prep school to conduct observations of children's play behaviours at different stages of their development. Trips to conferences and events also take place when time permits.

There are numerous careers that studying psychology can lead to, such as; Clinical psychology (the treatment of mental health disorders), Forensic psychology (application of psychological principles in criminal investigations and offender rehabilitation), Neuropsychology (Working with the the brain and behaviour), Medicine, Business, Couneslling and Psychotherapy, plus many more. Careers in the field of psychology are demanding but rewarding, and can take individuals around the world.
