Bede's

Maths

Maths is quite simply the most useful subject that you can study at school. From making millions in the city to sending satellites into orbit, no other subject is as useful as Maths. Here at Bede’s, we love Mathematics and aim to pass that love on to our pupils.

We believe passionately in embedding classroom learning with extra-curricular learning. In the First Year, pupils take a trip to Thorpe Park to learn about the physics and mathematical calculations of roller-coasters; for older pupils we take a trip to the annual Maths Fest, an all-day extravaganza designed for maths enthusiasts and sixth formers featuring some of the best maths speakers in the world.  We also host a range of inspirational speakers such as Rob Eastaway.  Pupils also participate in a range of external competitions including those run by the UKMT (UK Mathematics Trust).

Staff in the Maths Department are also committed to supporting pupils’ learning at all ages and abilities with additional clinics which run every day after school. This is supplemented in the run up to public exams with a weekend revision clinic which draws in very healthy numbers of GCSE and A Level students.

At A Level, students can opt to study both Maths and Pure Maths.

Those who are considering studying Maths at university, including Oxbridge, will benefit from specialist support including an organised visit to Oxford and Cambridge.

Staff from Bede’s Maths faculty provide weekly one-to-one supervision for students preparing to take Oxbridge entrance exams and pupils benefit from the expertise of highly-qualified staff and those who have recently graduated from Oxford University who are able to provide direct experience of the process.
