Bede's Development Foundation
The Bede’s Development Foundation, established in 2016, aims to enrich the Bede’s family community whilst maintaining the unique character of the Prep and Senior Schools and everything they stand for – inclusiveness, creativity, personalised education.
It is appropriate then that Peter Pyemont and Roger Perrin became our Founder Patrons:
‘PP’ Peter Pyemont was Headmaster of the Prep School from 1964 to 1999, when he handed over the reins to his brother Christopher. He remained an active member of the Bede’s community and valuable friend. PP passed away in February 2020 (Peter Pyemont obituary) and is fondly remembered at Bede’s.
Roger Perrin was Headmaster of the Senior School from its beginning in 1978 (overseeing its establishment at Upper Dicker in 1979) to his retirement in 2001.
Both Headmasters innovated and developed the schools; under Peter Pyemont, Bede’s Prep became the first co-ed prep school in the country and under Roger Perrin St Bede’s at Upper Dicker became one of the fastest growing and successful schools in the country, with the pupil roll increasing from 60 children in its foundation year at Upper Dicker to 600 by the turn of the century.
The Foundation maintains and builds connections with our extended Bede’s community, regionally, nationally and internationally and will also build and sustain a tradition of benefaction that will be central to Bede’s over future years.
Bede’s is unique in its open door policy and truly nurturing approach and at the same time has traditionally been a place for frugal ambition. PP’s vision for a new Senior School began in humble beginnings in a converted garage at the Prep School and under the leadership of Mr Perrin the facilities famously grew from numerous recovered obsolete buildings from nearby schools, recycling them to meet the rapidly growing needs!
In recent years, the schools have continued to develop through our fee income. However, these funds are limited and, with additional support, Bede’s Development Foundation aims to meet a number of ambitious plans for the future. From making our unique learning experience accessible to a broader group of talented students through a dedicated Bursary Fund to improving our facilities and learning resources, we want to continue to grow our schools.
